The department of Legal Metrology (Weight & Measures), Assam came into existence in the state of Assam in the year 1960 with a view to maintain the system of weight and measures etc as per with the other states / UT’s of the country.

 “Metrology” is the science of weight & Measures and “Legal Metrology” treats units of weightment and measurement methods and measuring instruments in relation to the mandatory technical and legal requirements which have the object of ensuring public guarantee from the point of view of security and accuracy  of the weighments and measurements

Information and service

Calibration of storage tanks :

• The storage tank used in transaction on protection must be calibrated by the legal Metrology Officer before putting such storage tanks in to use.
• The calibrated storage tanks must be re-calibrated on the completion of a period of 60 (sixty) months.

Disposal of prosecution case registered under the Act & Rules :

• Prosecution case registered by the Legal Metrology Officer for contain offences may be compounded by the controller on such other officers as may be authorized by him in this behalf on payment of composition fees by the offender.
• The prosecution cases which are either not compounded or not compoundable under the Act are sent to the court for tail.

Re-validation weights & Measures:

• The user of any weight on measure shall present his weight or measure for re-verification at the office of the Legal Metrology officer or at such other place as the Legal Metrology Officer may specify in this behalf.
• For re-verification of the weight or measure which cannot or should nto be moved from its location the user shall reportto the Legal Metrology officers at least 30(thirty) days in advance of the date on which the verification falls due.
• Every verified weight or measure must be re-verified and stamped on completion of a period of –

• Twenty – four months for all eights, capacity measures, length measures, tape, beam scale and counter machine, spacing balance.
• Sixty months for storage tanks and
• Twelve months for all weight or measure including tank lorry other than that mentioned in clauses (a) & (b)

Issue of licenses to Manufacture, Dealer & Repairer weights & Measures:

• Every manufacturer or repairer of, or dealer in, weight or measure shall make an application for the forward to the Controller of Legal Metrology Office.
• Every license issued to a manufacturer, dealer or repairer shall be valid for a minimum period of one calendar year and may be renewed for a period of one to five years, by the controller or other officers as may be authorized by him in this behalf.

Verification & stamping of weights & measures:

• No weight or measure shall be sold or used without verification and stamping by the legal Metrology Officer.
• The user of weight or measure shall present such weight or measure for verification of the office of the Legal Metrology officer or at such other places as the Legal Metrology Officer may specify in this behalf.
• The weight or measure which cannot or should not be moved from its location shall be verified and stamped in situ.

Citizen Charter

Aims & objective of the department :

• Maintenance of accuracy in all weights &measures used in transaction and protection.
• Protection of consumers against cheating in weights & measures in transaction and protection.
• To ensure correct quantities in weight, measures and packaged commodities.
• To ensure mandatory declaration on packaged commodities such as net quantity, net weight etc.
• To ensure sale of packaged commodities at the price (MRP) marked on the packages

In order to achieve the above goal the Department enforces and implements the Legal Metrology Act, 2009 and the rules framed there under.

We deliver the following services:

• Verification and stamping of all kinds of weights, measures, weighing and measuring instruments as per provision of the Legal Metrology (General) Rules, 2011 and issue of verification certificate thereof.
• Calibration of storage tanks used in transaction and protection and issue of calibration charts thereof.
• Issue renewal of license to the manufacture / dealer / repairer of weights and measures.
• Checking and determination of “net quantity” and error in packaged commodities at the premises of the manufacturers on packers.
• To protect the consumers interest conducts inspections / surprise inspection for detecting violation of the provisions of the Legal Metrology laws and to take legal action against the concerned traders, forms, etc. by registering prosecution case.
• Compounding of offences as per provisions of the Legal Metrology Act, 2009 by realizing fees as prescribed in rules.
• Sending prosecution cases, if not compounded by the offenders, to the court of law for trial.

Our aim is to achieve the following service delivery / quality parameters –

5	To protect the consumers interest conducts inspections / surprise inspection for detecting violation of the provisions of the legal metrology laws	No fixed time limit	The inspector of legal metrology  carries inspection on as regular basis.
6	Compounding offences	Max 30 days from the submission of application for composition	It depends on the time required for submission of the above report by the concerned Legal Metrology Officer.
8	Sending prosecution case	Maximum 6 months to 12  months	It may be extended  as per provision of CRPF Rule 1973.
